“Years ago, when I was going through a really hard time, a friend of mine who was a naturalist gave me some beautiful advice about how to best take care of myself. He told me, ‘When an animal in the wild has been injured, it has only two strategies for how to heal itself: It can rest, or it can go to the water. Right now, try to do as much of both as possible.’ Rest. And then go to the water. Drink the water. Submerge yourself in the water. Touch the water. Look at the water.” –  Elizabeth Gilbert

This full moon in Pisces, one of the three water signs of the zodiac, is that healing water. It is the calming, soothing, cleansing healing that only water can bring.

All the elements – earth, fire, air, and water – can heal, but they all heal differently. When we heal by fire, we clear out all that is no longer serving us. We burn it to the ground. The solar eclipse, happening in the firey sign of Leo, did that for many of us. We went through the fire, and we may have gotten burned in the process. Many people I know faced cataclysmic events – relationship changes, career changes, hospitalizations, even death – and we had to rise like the phoenix from the flames.

Fire is powerful, but it burns. It leaves destruction in its wake. The full moon in Pisces is like a cool and soothing rain on this destruction. Now is the time to connect to the unconditional love of Spirit to help soothe some of the pain you may have experienced. Pisces, the last in the zodiac of the water signs – indeed the last sign of the zodiac – represents the cosmic ocean from which we are all born, and to which we all, when we have finished our journey, ultimately return. It represents absolute oneness with spirit.

My father recently told me a story about two waves coming into the shore. As they were about to hit the shore, one started panicking- “We’re just waves, we’re going to crash and die!” The other wave looked at him and said, “You’re not a wave. You’re the whole ocean.”  The moon in Pisces knows it’s the whole ocean.  It knows its connection with all that is not from a place of separateness, because it is all that it is.  Take time to remember your connection with the cosmos- this will be your gateway to healing at this time.

With the moon conjuncting Neptune at this time, there is also a strong possibility of spiritual visions arising– visions which reaffirm to you this feeling of connection. Neptune rules Pisces, and has been there since 2012 and will continue to be until 2025. Neptune in Pisces has been raising the spiritual vibration of the planet, making everyone just a little more tuned in – or, in some cases – a lot more tuned in! The moon conjuncting Neptune at this time will light up the spiritual nature of Neptune, meaning that any meditative or spiritual work right now is well aspected for receiving messages from beyond. But be discerning about the messages you receive. Neptune in Pisces also gives rise to illusions and deceptions, and a tendency towards trying to escape from our problems through alcohol, drugs, or other mind altering means (even trancing out while watching TV or surfing the internet in a Neptunian kind of escapism!).

So how can you make sure you don’t get swept away this month by these energies? By staying grounded through the energy of the sun in Virgo. Virgo teaches us to stay grounded through service. We can all learn something from the purity of heart of Virgos. Coming from the Leo season, which is all about shining our own light, Virgo teaches us the importance of serving.

As you are nurtured by the loving waters of the moon in Pisces, think about how you can give this nurturing love to others through service. Virgo sets aside its own ego so it may be of greater service to the whole. How can you do that this month? It doesn’t need to be big or life-changing – even small acts of service to those around us remind us that we’re here on earth as part of a community – these acts ground us into present reality.

As you serve others, so are you served.  As you heal others, so are you healed. Allow this medicine, the medicine of unconditional love and service into your life, this month and this full moon.
